Zanzibar is warm all year, but the rain decides how good your beach days will be. Here is how the island's seasons work, so you can pick the right month for your trip.

June to October: the best overall

This is the main dry season. Expect sunny days, very little rain and comfortable daytime temperatures of around 26°C. The sea is calm, which makes it ideal for snorkelling, diving and dhow cruises. It is our top pick for families.

Mid-December to February: hot and clear

A second dry, hot spell. Days often reach 30°C or more, and the water is very clear, which is great for snorkelling. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks of the year, so book flights and hotels well ahead.

November and December: the short rains

Expect short showers, mostly in the afternoon. Mornings are usually bright, and prices are often lower before the festive season starts.

March to May: the long rains

This is the wet season. April is the wettest month, with heavy afternoon storms, and the sea becomes cloudier. Some hotels close for a few weeks. If you want guaranteed beach weather, avoid April and May.

Which beach should you choose?

The northern beaches, such as Nungwi and Kendwa, have very small tides, so you can swim at almost any time of day. On the east and south coasts, the tide goes out a long way, which is beautiful to see but means swimming depends on the time of day.
